Google Ads or Meta Ads: where should you start?

One catches demand that already exists. The other creates it. Pick the wrong one for your business and you can waste a month deciding that advertising does not work. Here is how we choose.

By Sean McKenzie·6 minute read·Strategy

It is the question almost every owner asks the moment they decide to spend on advertising. Should I be on Google or on Meta? The honest answer is that one is not better than the other. They do different jobs, and the right place to start depends entirely on how people decide to buy what you sell.

The one difference that decides it

Strip everything else away and it comes down to this. Google Ads catches demand that already exists. Someone types emergency electrician near me and you appear at the exact moment they are looking for what you do. Meta Ads, which covers Facebook and Instagram, does the opposite. It puts your business in front of people who were not searching for anything, while they scroll. You create the demand rather than catch it.

Both can work brilliantly. But if you start with the wrong one for your business, you can spend a month convinced advertising does not work, when really you just picked the tool that did not match your buyer.

Start with Google when people already search for what you do

If your service is something people actively look for the moment they need it, start with Google. Trades, emergency work, professional services, anything urgent or based on a need. The person searching plumber burst pipe is not browsing, they are ready to call someone in the next ten minutes. You do not have to convince them they have a problem. You just need to be there, look trustworthy, and make it easy to get in touch.

This is why most local service businesses we work with see Google carry the heaviest load. The intent is already there. Your job is simply to meet it before anyone else does.

Start with Meta when you have to create the want

Meta earns its place first when people are not sitting there searching for you. That covers a lot of businesses:

If what you sell is better shown than searched, Meta lets you reach a large local audience cheaply and put the offer right in front of them. A great fifteen second video of the experience will do more than any keyword ever could.

Two businesses we run, two different starts. The electricians we work with lead on Google, because people search for an electrician the day their hot water dies. When Padel Logan opened, almost nobody was searching for a padel club in the area yet, so the launch ran on Meta, with short videos of the courts filling up, and that is what filled the timetable. Same budget, completely different tool, because the buyer behaves completely differently.

Why splitting a small budget across both usually fails

The instinct is to do a bit of both. On a small budget that is the fastest way to get nothing to work. Each platform needs enough spend and enough time to gather data and improve. Divide a modest budget in half and you starve both, so neither ever gets out of the learning phase. Pick the one that matches how your customers buy, do it properly, prove it brings in work, then add the second once the first is paying for itself.

The part that matters whichever you pick

Neither platform is worth a dollar if you cannot see what it brings back. Before you turn anything on, make sure a call, a form submission and a lead are all tracked, so you know which clicks turned into real enquiries and what each one cost. Without that you are guessing, and guessing is expensive on both. Our reporting and strategy work starts here for exactly that reason, and if you want the budget side of it, we broke that down in how much to spend on Google Ads.

So, where should you start?

If people already search for what you do, start with Google and catch the demand that is there. If you need to create the want, start with Meta and put the offer in front of the right local audience. Most businesses end up using both, with Google catching the ready buyers and Meta keeping a steady stream of new people discovering you. But on day one, pick the one that matches your customer, and give it a real run before you judge it.
