Why most tradie websites don't get enquiries

You are getting visitors but the phone stays quiet. The problem is almost never traffic. It is that the site quietly lets people leave. Here are the five leaks we find most, and how to plug them.

By Sean McKenzie·6 minute read·Websites

Most tradies we talk to assume a quiet phone means they need more people visiting the website. Sometimes that is true. More often, the visitors are already arriving and the site is quietly letting them leave. You are paying for that traffic, through ads, through Google, through word of mouth, and then losing it at the final step. The good news is that the leaks are almost always the same five, and every one of them is fixable in an afternoon.

1. Your phone number is hiding

On a phone, a tradie website has one main job: make it stupidly easy to call you. Yet the number is often buried in the footer, written as plain text you cannot tap, or missing from the top of the page entirely. Put a tappable phone number in the header, visible the second the page loads, and repeat it at the end of every section. Someone with a dead hot water system should never have to hunt for how to reach you.

2. Nobody can tell what you do or where you do it

A visitor decides in about three seconds whether they are in the right place. If your homepage opens with we deliver quality workmanship and customer satisfaction, they still have no idea whether you fix air conditioners in their suburb. Say it plainly and say it at the top: what you do and where you do it. Air conditioning installation and repair across the northside. That one line does more work than a whole page of mission statement.

3. It is slow and awkward on a phone

The large majority of tradie website traffic is on a mobile, often outdoors on patchy reception. If your site takes five seconds to load, or the text is tiny and the buttons are hard to tap, people are gone before they see a thing. A fast, clean mobile site is not a nice to have, it is the whole game. This is the first thing we check in an audit, because it quietly costs more enquiries than anything else on this list.

4. There is no proof you are any good

Choosing a tradie is a trust decision. People want to see that you have done the job before and that others were happy with it. Most sites give them nothing to go on. Add real proof: genuine reviews with a name attached, photos of your actual work rather than stock images, the areas you cover, your licence and insurance. A real photo of a job you finished beats a glossy stock photo every time, because it proves you are real.

5. There is no obvious next step

Even a visitor who likes what they see needs to be told what to do next. Too many sites leave them to work it out for themselves. Every page should point at one clear action: call now, or a short form that asks only for the few things you actually need. Keep it to name, number, suburb and the job. Every extra field is one more reason for someone to give up. One clear next step, repeated down the page, is what turns a reader into an enquiry.

The common thread. None of these are about getting more people to the site. They are about keeping the people already arriving, and making it effortless for them to choose you and get in touch. Fix the five and the same traffic you have today starts producing more calls.

This is not theory. It is exactly how we build pages that convert. On the smoke alarm and air conditioning pages we built for Tasman Electrical, the phone number is tappable in the header, the service and the suburb sit in the first line, the page loads fast on a phone, the proof is real, and there is one clear action. You can see them on our landing pages.

How to find the leak that is costing you

Open your site on your phone and look at it the way a customer would. Can you call in one tap? Do you know in three seconds what the business does and whether it covers you? Is there any proof? Is the next step obvious? Every no is money walking out the door. Fix them in that order and you will usually see the difference before you spend another dollar on traffic.
